What makes a tip useful

• What happened, in one or two sentences.
• Where and when — city, county, state, and the date.
• How you know — you were there, you have the document, someone told you.
• Something we can check — a link, a meeting agenda, a filing, a name and title.

A tip does not have to be a finished story. “The county committee is meeting Thursday about the ballot-access rule and nobody has reported it” is a good tip. So is “your directory lists the wrong chair for my county.”

What we do with it

We read every message. We verify before we publish — a single anonymous text is a lead, not a fact, and we will usually need to reach a second source or a public record before anything runs. Most tips do not become stories, and we cannot promise a reply to each one.

Your identity

We do not publish the name or phone number of someone who sends a tip without their agreement. If you want to be quoted, say so. If you want to stay out of it entirely, say that instead and we will treat the tip as background.

Be aware of what a text message is and is not. SMS is not encrypted, your mobile carrier records that the message was sent, and we can see the number it came from. If a matter is genuinely sensitive, consider whether a text from your own phone is the right channel before you send it.

Directory corrections

The organization directory covers more than 3,200 Republican Party organizations, much of it assembled from public records rather than confirmed with the organizations themselves. Entries marked UNVERIFIED carry a caution label for that reason. If you have first-hand knowledge of an organization — a chair’s name, a current address, a committee that has merged or dissolved — that correction is welcome and useful.
